4 Keys to NFL Success You Can Use

Seattle Seahawks Head Coach and Super Bowl Champion Mike MacDonald is an unassuming coach.

During the Super Bowl, announcer Mike Tirico (legend) said that when MacDonald is asked to tell his story, the man just sits there, unsure what to say.

But the Seahawks’ success this season was no accident.

Sure, you always need good players—and some luck.

But Mike MacDonald was a critical factor. His philosophy is something from which we all can learn.

1. “Stack wins.”

Winning is not about heroic days.

It’s about showing up consistently. Doing the boring work.

Ideally you can measure repeatable behaviors in a scorecard.

2. “Margins of advantage.”

The leader’s job is to tilt the field to give their team small bits of advantage—in every way they can.

3. “Aggressive, but adaptable.”

The Seahawks defense was incredible during the season but especially in the Super Bowl. One word describes them: aggressive.

However, aggression can be a one-track playlist. Instead, MacDonald made sure his players were adaptable to different offensive schemes and on-the-fly changes.

4. Team bonds are a force multiplier.

Thought leaders are often dissociated from the reality of what it’s really like to be doing the work. So team cohesion gets overlooked compared to vague principles like psychological safety.

MacDonald credited team bonds as much as anything to the Seahawks winning it all.
